This beautiful mosaic was created by approx 200 children this week at Netherton Infant & Nursery Primary School in Huddersfield, with children as young as three years old.
Taking the theme of mini beasts the children drew pictures which I selected from to create the overall design. The mosaic will be displayed on the outside of the school building and measures 120cm x 100cm.
Funding was provided by the PTA.
Really carefully managed work considering the age of these children. Lots of classroom skills I think!
What a fabulous design for all these future budding artists to work with. Fun and creativity. Great. Congratulations to all.
Thanks pat looking forward to seeing u soon and catching up on your work x

I am mesmerised by the neatness of it all, my kinder kids have made fab mosaics too but boy there is a lot of work getting them to look amazing. Yet you have even paid attention to the andamento, I am jealous Sue.
Thanks Julee, the children worked in small groups at a time on the mosaic and they were really patient so they did a great job.
Hi Sue, wonder if you would mind explaining how you go about designing your school projects. I have done so many and cannot conceive of them having such perfect andamento and tess shapes even with tiny groups and lots of patience. Do you draw on the andamento lines beforehand? and work out the colour scheme? Also, who cuts the tiles? Sorry to bombard you with questions but any answers will be gratefully received. Thanks heaps.
Hi Julie
I only draw an outline (like those in a children’s colouring book) based on the children’s designs. Colour choices are made collectively with explanations about contrast and the colour wheel. I discuss andemento with the children and they quickly grasp the idea of letting the piece flow around a shape. For safety reasons I cut the tiles, or instruct parents/teachers/teaching assistants how to cut the tiles with children who are at primary school, For secondery/high school I let the children cut the tiles. Hope this helps, Sue
